How does it work?

Picture
We have two terms each year.  A variety of classes are presented each fall and winter/spring terms. Participants can enroll in any number of classes on a space available basis with a membership fee of $75 for each term in which they register.
To get started:
  • Set up an account.  This doesn't cost anything, but you'll automatically receive information from us and it makes it easy to join for a term if you decide to do that.  You only need to set up an account once.  Then you'll be able to use your email address and password from that time on.  If you're receiving our emails, then you might already have an account!
  • Join for the term.  Prior to each term, and before registration begins, we publish the list of classes we will be offering  that term.  If, after looking at the list, you decide to join that term, you can join by paying the membership fee for the term.
A limited number of scholarships are  available. Please contact us.
  • Register for classes. When registration opens, you can sign up for as many classes as you like.  You will be placed in classes on a space available basis.  The time you register and the priorities you indicate are considered when placing you in classes.  Click here for more registration information
  • Enjoy!  You will get your class list prior to the beginning of the classes.

Our History

In the fall of 2014, a small group of retired individuals began talking about the possibility of classes for seniors that would reflect the successful national model:  The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.  New Dimensions has incorporated many of the policies and much of the structure of OLLI.  This model has provided a framework to guide in the planning of all facets of what we now know as New Dimensions Lifelong Learning Institute (NDLLI).

After much discussion, a concept for the program was formed and planning for classes began. New Dimensions was launched in the spring of 2015 with 16 classes and 64 members and most all of the classes were held at local churches and CMU.

After completing 13 sessions (one in the winter/spring and one in the fall of each year), we have grown showing a 60% increase. The Grand Valley shows there is a need and great interest for people 50 and over to continue learning and meeting new people.

New Dimensions was created by seniors to serve seniors over the age of 50.

Our Philosophy & Guidelines

Guidelines for Course Selection

  • Will provide diverse and intellectually stimulating offerings in a wide variety of disciplines to include but not limited to: history, science, literature, political science, ethics, philosophy, economics, nature study, humanities, art studies including history and appreciation, and current issues. In addition, topics on lifestyle enrichment may be included: i.e. travel, entertainment, wellness, and fitness.
  • Will include topics of controversy and concern and ensure that instruction represents information on all sides of an issue.
  • Will strictly limit courses representing private business or nonprofit agencies; these classes when offered will meet strict guidelines including board-approved sponsorship.

Privacy Policy

New Dimensions keeps contact information you give us along with your class registration information.  We use that information to keep in contact with you and to register you for classes.  We also share your email address and phone number with instructors for classes in which you’re enrolled as well as with New Dimension volunteers who are working with those classes.  We do not knowingly share any contact information (or any other information about you) with any other entities for any purpose.  For our complete privacy policy, click here.

Program Philosophy

In the spirit of fostering understanding, each member is encouraged to share opinions and ideas.  NEW DIMENSIONS class participants do not attempt to "convert" others, because there is a mutual respect for each member's experiences, ideas, value systems and beliefs. The true focus of a New Dimensions class is the critical examination of issues and opinions.  Each participant's point of view carries equal weight. Consensus is not a goal.  We encourage participants with varied perspectives to attend and become engaged through discussion and civil debate.

 Guidelines for Instructors

  • Will create a welcoming classroom encouraging all participants to engage and interact through a variety of formats including discussion, small groups, question, and presentation.
  • Will respect the diverse opinions of participants.
  • Will remain neutral in presenting controversial material and will include information on various positions on the subject.
  • Will represent varied ethnic and racial groups whenever possible.

Midday with New Dimensions

Midday with New Dimensions is a partnership between New Dimensions and Mesa County Libraries offering free, open to the public, one-hour, noontime lectures at the Mesa County Central Library the second Thursday of every other month. These lectures are scaled down versions or parts of past New Dimensions classes and cover a wide variety of subjects.
